Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake, also known as Gadsisar Lake, is one of the most beautiful and historic attractions in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Located close to the famous Jaisalmer Fort, the lake offers a peaceful contrast to the golden sandstone architecture and desert landscape of the city. Surrounded by beautifully carved temples, shrines, chhatris and stone ghats, Gadisar Lake is an excellent place to enjoy nature, photography and a glimpse of Jaisalmer's traditional water-management system.

History of Gadisar Lake
Gadisar Lake has an important place in the history of Jaisalmer. Historical sources differ slightly about its earliest construction, but Rajasthan Tourism describes the present historic lake as a 14th-century water reservoir developed by Maharawal Gadsi Singh to meet the water requirements of the arid region. Other historical accounts connect the original water body with Rawal Jaisal, the founder of Jaisalmer, and its later reconstruction with Gadsi Singh. For centuries, water was one of the most valuable resources in the desert region. Gadisar Lake was therefore much more than a scenic attraction. It served as an important source of water for the people of Jaisalmer. Rainwater and surface runoff were collected in the reservoir, helping the city survive in the dry Thar Desert.

Over the years, several temples, shrines, ghats and beautifully carved chhatris were constructed around the lake. These structures add to its historic character and show the traditional craftsmanship of Jaisalmer. Today, the lake is primarily a recreational and heritage attraction rather than the city's main water source. One of the most recognizable features at the entrance is Tilon Ki Pol, an ornate sandstone gateway associated with a popular local story about Tilon, a royal courtesan. The gateway and the surrounding architecture make the approach to Gadisar Lake especially attractive for visitors and photographers.

A visit to Gadisar Lake is not only about seeing the water. Visitors can walk around the lake and admire the sandstone ghats, temples, shrines and chhatris. The reflections of the golden sandstone structures on the water create beautiful photographic views, particularly during the softer morning and evening light. Boating is another popular activity. Depending on the season and local operating conditions, visitors can find different types of boat rides on the lake. The lake is also known for birdwatching, especially during the cooler months when migratory birds may be seen around the water. Gadisar Lake is also conveniently located near other important Jaisalmer attractions, making it easy to include in a city sightseeing itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Gadisar Lake
The best season to visit Gadisar Lake is generally October to March, when the weather in Jaisalmer is more comfortable for sightseeing. Winter mornings can be particularly pleasant and may offer opportunities for birdwatching.
For the best experience, visit either early in the morning or in the late afternoon before sunset. Morning visits are peaceful, with softer light and fewer visitors. The evening is ideal for enjoying the golden reflections of the sandstone architecture on the lake.
Summer afternoons can be extremely hot in Jaisalmer, so visitors should avoid spending much time outdoors during the middle of the day. If travelling between April and June, an early-morning or evening visit is more comfortable.

How to Reach Gadisar Lake
Gadisar Lake is located in the southern part of Jaisalmer and is only about 1.5 km from Jaisalmer Fort and Jaisalmer Railway Station according to travel references.
By Car or Taxi : A private car or taxi is one of the most comfortable ways to reach Gadisar Lake. It is especially convenient for families and travellers visiting several attractions in Jaisalmer in one day. Local sightseeing by car and driver can combine Gadisar Lake with Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli and other nearby attractions.
By Auto-Rickshaw : Auto-rickshaws are readily useful for short-distance travel within Jaisalmer. From the railway station, bus stand or nearby hotels, visitors can take an auto-rickshaw directly towards Gadisar Lake.
By Walking : If you are staying near Jaisalmer Fort, Gadisar Lake can also be reached on foot. The lake is close enough to the fort area for travellers who enjoy walking, although the desert heat should be considered during warmer months.
By Train : Jaisalmer Railway Station is relatively close to Gadisar Lake. After arriving at the station, visitors can take an auto-rickshaw, taxi or local transport to reach the lake.
By Air : Travellers arriving at Jaisalmer Airport can hire a taxi or private car to reach the lake. A private transfer is particularly convenient if Gadisar Lake is part of a larger Jaisalmer sightseeing tour.
