Tanot Mata Temple

Shri Tanot Mata Temple is one of the most interesting religious and historical attractions near Jaisalmer. Located deep in the Thar Desert close to the India-Pakistan border, the temple is associated with faith, military history and the famous battles of 1965 and 1971. It is around 120 km from Jaisalmer city, making it a popular destination for a full-day road trip.

History of Tanot Mata Temple
Tanot Mata is traditionally associated with the goddess Aavad Mata and the Hinglaj Mata tradition. According to traditional accounts, the temple was established in the 9th century by Bhati Rajput ruler Tanu Rao. For generations, Tanot Mata has been worshipped by local communities and people living in the Jaisalmer region. The temple became especially famous because of its connection with the Indo-Pak wars. During the 1965 war, the area around Tanot came under heavy shelling. Local tradition says that many bombs and shells fell around the temple but failed to explode, and the temple itself remained standing. Some of the war remnants are preserved and displayed at the temple complex.

The temple also became associated with the 1971 Battle of Longewala. The nearby battlefield is an important part of India's military history, and Tanot Mata is remembered by many soldiers as a place of faith and protection. After the 1965 war, the Border Security Force (BSF) became closely involved with the temple and its upkeep. Today, Tanot Mata Temple offers a unique combination of spirituality and history. Visitors can see the peaceful temple surroundings, learn about its wartime association and experience the striking landscape of the Thar Desert.

Best Time to Visit Tanot Mata Temple
The best time to visit Tanot Mata Temple is generally October to March, when temperatures are much more comfortable for travelling through the desert. November to February is particularly pleasant for a road trip from Jaisalmer. During April to June, temperatures can become extremely high, making a long desert journey uncomfortable, especially during the afternoon. July to September can be comparatively less harsh, but weather conditions can be less predictable. Winter mornings and evenings are especially enjoyable. If you want to explore both Tanot Mata Temple and the Longewala War Memorial, starting early from Jaisalmer is a good option.

How to Reach Tanot Mata Temple
By Car or Taxi: The easiest way to reach Tanot Mata Temple is by road from Jaisalmer. The temple is approximately 120 km from Jaisalmer, and the drive generally takes around two to three hours depending on road and traffic conditions. A private car with a driver is convenient because public transport options are limited in this remote border region.
The journey itself is part of the experience. As you leave Jaisalmer, the landscape gradually changes into open desert, with sandy terrain, wind farms and long stretches of quiet road.
By Train: There is no railway station at Tanot. Visitors can take a train to Jaisalmer Railway Station and continue by private taxi or car. Jaisalmer is the nearest major railway connection.
By Air: The nearest airport is Jaisalmer Airport. From the airport, visitors can hire a private vehicle for the onward journey to Tanot. Jodhpur Airport is another option for travellers arriving by air, followed by road travel to Jaisalmer and Tanot.
